Some memories mean more than words

Someone close to you

A gift with a face and a story behind it. A natural expression and clear details make all the difference.

A portrait of two

A shared photograph for an anniversary or another occasion. We adapt the composition to the finished format.

Family and group portraits

More faces need more room. Once we have seen the photograph, we can recommend a suitable size.

A personal inscription

A name, date or short message can complement the portrait without taking attention away from it.

Materials and craftsmanship

The best starting point is the right photograph

Engraving creates contrast in the material rather than printing a colour image. That is why we prepare your photograph for the chosen surface. The material, size and extent of editing are agreed before production begins.

A clearly defined faceEyes and expression should be clear. Send the original image file rather than a screenshot.
Light and contrastEven lighting helps preserve facial features. Deep shadows can hide important detail.
Material and formatTimber brings its own grain to the image. We choose the size and orientation to suit the subject.
Editing and approvalWe agree the crop, background and wording, and settle the composition before engraving.

Engraved portraits · practical advice

A little planning goes a long way

Expression first, resolution second

A large file cannot make a blurred face sharp. Start with a photograph that captures the right expression, clear eyes and good light. If you have several options, send them over so we can compare.

An engraving is not a colour print

Light and dark areas are created by working the surface. Eye or clothing colours are not reproduced as they would be in print. Detail, contrast and a clear silhouette give the photograph a different, tactile character.

The timber becomes part of the portrait

The grain and colour of timber may show through the face and background, so the result will not look exactly like a screen image. We assess fine detail against the size and material of the finished piece, not just the digital file.

Frequently asked questions

Good to know before you enquire

Is a phone photograph good enough?

Often, yes, provided it is sharp and the face is large enough in the frame. Email the original file to ahojepoxy@gmail.com; a compressed preview may not show all the detail.

Can you remove the background?

We assess the possibilities from the photograph. Hair and fine details cannot always be separated cleanly from the background.

Can you engrave a group portrait?

We check the number of faces and their size within the image. A larger group may need a bigger panel or a different crop.

Can I add a name and date?

Yes, an inscription can be included in the design. We confirm the exact spelling, punctuation and any accents before production.

Can you improve an old, blurred photograph?

We can assess possible adjustments, but missing detail cannot be reliably recovered. If the image is unsuitable, we will recommend another photograph.

Portraits engraved from photographs: contrast, material and inscription

Engraving a portrait is not simply a matter of transferring any image onto timber. Clear facial detail, contrast and the size of the finished piece determine the result.

Choose your photograph

A clearly visible face and sufficient resolution give us the best starting point. If you have several photographs, send them together so we can compare their suitability.

Material and composition

Timber grain and colour influence the portrait’s character. We position the image, borders and any wording so the photograph and inscription complement rather than compete with each other.

A gift with personal meaning

A portrait can celebrate a person, a pet or a shared moment. We add a date, name or short message only where it supports the composition.

We start with the original image

Your portrait is made in Bratislava, but the initial design can be discussed remotely. After your enquiry, we ask for the original photograph rather than a screenshot or an image reduced by a messaging app. If the face or important details are unclear, we suggest another image before settling on the gift’s size and design.
