Bespoke timber and resin kitchen worktops and islands

A kitchen worktop faces demands a coffee table rarely encounters: water, steam, hot cookware, knives, oils, cleaning products and cut-outs for sinks and appliances. Timber and resin can create a distinctive kitchen surface, but the construction and finish must suit the intended use. It is not simply a river table made larger.

A kitchen worktop needs more than good looks

Timber and resin offer scope for a genuinely individual kitchen: a selected slab, a clear or coloured inset, an island with a breakfast-bar section, discreet power provision and planned sink or hob openings. A live edge can be retained where it suits the layout. But the kitchen is a demanding environment, and each detail needs a practical purpose.

The surface will encounter moisture, localised heat, abrasive dirt, food acids, grease and everyday wear. The question is not simply whether a resin worktop can be made. It is which construction and finish suit the brief, where the timber and resin belong, and what care requirements and limitations need to be agreed before manufacture.

We do not present a resin worktop as a universal substitute for stone, engineered quartz or stainless steel. For an individual kitchen, statement island, bar area or hospitality interior, it can offer a composition made specifically for the space. Suitability for food preparation and commercial use must be assessed for the actual material system and requirements, not assumed from the appearance.

A worktop, island or counter needs more than an attractive front view. Review the joints, cut-outs, working height, equipment access, cleaning arrangements and the route for bringing the finished section into the building.

What to know before ordering

Start with properly dried timber, a stable construction, protected edges and cut-outs, a clearly specified finish and care instructions that reflect the material’s temperature limits.

Do not assume a hot pan or oven dish can go straight onto resin. Heat tolerance depends on the particular resin and finish; use suitable heat protection and follow the agreed care instructions.

Even where the resin resists moisture, the complete worktop contains other materials and joints. Give the sink area, end grain and every exposed edge particular attention.

Use a chopping board rather than cutting directly on a decorative resin surface.

Do not assume every resin is suitable for food contact. Materials intended for that use are subject to specific requirements in the EU; suitability needs assessing for the actual finished system and intended contact conditions.

Design a substantial kitchen island together with its supporting units or base, services, circulation space and delivery and fitting arrangements.

Solid timber continues to respond to humidity after installation. The fixing design needs to accommodate its natural movement rather than rigidly prevent it.

A worktop is not simply a river table

A kitchen has concentrated areas of exposure that need individual attention: the sink, dishwasher, hob, kettle, coffee machine, wall junction and everyday food-preparation area. Assess these details rather than treating the entire surface as one uniform design problem.

Extending a beautiful timber top is not enough. Plan the cut-outs, fixings, supporting kitchen units, appliance steam and maintenance access as part of the construction.

Sometimes the better solution is to reserve a prominent resin detail for the breakfast-bar side of the island and choose a different approach for the preparation area. Bespoke manufacture lets you separate functions rather than ask one material to do everything.

Allow for timber movement in the kitchen

The USDA Wood Handbook explains that timber exchanges moisture with the surrounding air. Changes in moisture content affect its dimensions, which is why drying, room conditions and fixing details belong in the design.

A protective finish slows moisture exchange but does not eliminate it. This matters particularly for a wide worktop or substantial solid-timber island.

The fixing design should not rigidly lock solid timber to its support without allowing for seasonal movement. Account for the grain direction and how the top is attached.

Why timber moisture matters before manufacture

Timber that has not been dried appropriately may continue to change dimensions substantially after fitting. That can lead to distortion, opening cracks or stress around the resin sections.

The USDA guidance highlights drying, storage and installation at a moisture content suited to the anticipated conditions of use. These steps help reduce dimensional-change problems; they do not stop timber movement altogether.

Kitchen conditions change with cooking, heating and appliance use. Consider the room’s humidity and local exposure around the sink and dishwasher, not just the conditions in the workshop.

Oak, walnut or ash for your worktop?

Oak is a versatile choice, with a distinctive grain that sits well alongside stone or metal in both contemporary and more traditional interiors.

Walnut brings warmth and richness to a darker palette. It can be particularly effective on a substantial island where the timber is the room’s focal material.

Ash offers lighter tones and a pronounced grain, pairing naturally with black, grey or clear resin in a contemporary kitchen.

The individual slab matters more than the species name alone. For a working surface, assess soundness, cracks, knots and the proposed cut-out positions as well as the grain.

Where a live edge makes sense

A live edge can work beautifully on the outer breakfast-bar side, where its shape is visible and comfortable to touch. Near the sink or appliances, an intricate edge may make cleaning and fitting unnecessarily difficult.

An island can therefore have a precisely shaped edge along the units and a more organic outer edge beside the seating.

A natural edge does not mean leaving loose bark in place. Remove unstable material while retaining the timber’s underlying organic outline.

Deciding what the resin inset should do

Resin can fill a natural void, form a river between two slabs, create a clear window or introduce a local decorative detail. The overall construction still needs appropriate support.

For kitchens, we favour a considered use of resin rather than adding it everywhere by default. A high-gloss coating over the entire surface may look striking, but fine surface marks can become more visible in everyday use.

A suitable satin finish or combined material approach may be more practical for daily use. Agree the complete surface system and its care requirements before manufacture.

Clear resin in a kitchen

A clear inset creates visual depth and can feel lighter than an opaque colour. It also makes bubbles, edge imperfections, anything visible beneath the surface and changes in the timber’s colour more apparent.

A clear section can be striking on a substantial island, particularly with considered lighting. Account for sunlight exposure too: some epoxy systems can change appearance over time under UV light.

For an island near a large south-facing window, review the chosen resin’s UV performance and any compatible protective finish before manufacture. Do not assume a clear finish will remain unchanged indefinitely.

Choosing coloured resin

Smoky, graphite, black, deep green, amber, milky and muted neutral tones can be easier to coordinate with a kitchen over time. The right palette is a design choice, not a guarantee against material ageing.

A vivid blue may make an immediate impression but become a strong constraint when you update the room. Review the colour alongside cabinet fronts, flooring, metalwork and lighting rather than in isolation.

For a bar or restaurant, a brand colour can work as a considered accent without turning the entire counter into a promotional display.

Give the sink area particular attention

A sink cut-out exposes the timber’s end grain and other vulnerable surfaces. These need appropriate protection, and prolonged water exposure should be avoided.

An undermounted sink needs especially careful assessment because the worktop edge sits above the bowl and is regularly splashed. Its suitability depends on the actual material and installation system.

The sealant, finish and sink installation method must be compatible. Cutting corners on the cut-out detail can put the timber at risk even when the decorative resin section is well made.

Taps and other openings

Prepare tap, soap-dispenser and filtered-water openings from the final product specifications, not an approximate layout.

For a thick top, check the tap’s permitted mounting thickness before making the worktop.

CNC routing can produce accurate openings and, where appropriate, local underside recesses for mounting hardware. Check the remaining thickness and support as part of the design.

Planning the hob cut-out

A hob cut-out involves heat exposure as well as dimensions. Follow the appliance manufacturer’s requirements for the worktop material, clearances, ventilation and installation.

Do not assume epoxy tolerates any temperature. Some decorative tabletop systems have limited heat resistance, and their specifications may not suit a particular hob installation.

For example, TotalBoat’s TableTop project-kit instructions warn against placing items hotter than 125°F — approximately 52°C — on the cured surface. This is a limit for that manufacturer’s product, not a specification for every epoxy or an Ahoj Epoxy worktop. Always check the documentation for the actual resin and finish selected.

Use heat protection for hot cookware

A pan taken straight from the hob can be far hotter than a decorative resin surface is designed to tolerate.

Use a suitable heat-resistant trivet and follow the surface manufacturer’s care instructions. It is a simple precaution, not a reason to disregard the material’s temperature limits.

If direct contact with very hot cookware is central to the brief, assess a more suitable material for that zone, such as an appropriately specified ceramic, stone or stainless-steel system. Each has its own limitations; none should be treated as universally damage-proof.

Kettles, coffee machines and small appliances

A kettle or coffee machine presents different demands from a hot pan, but can still expose a local area to warmth, steam and water over time.

Where compatible with the appliance instructions, suitable protective mats can help. Check beneath regularly and remove trapped moisture rather than leaving it unnoticed.

Avoid directing repeated steam onto exposed timber edges or the underside of an overhanging detail.

Protect the area above the dishwasher

A dishwasher can expose the surrounding area to heat and steam, particularly when opened after a cycle. Protect and fit the underside of the worktop according to the kitchen-system and appliance manufacturers’ requirements.

Uneven moisture or heat exposure can create differential movement and stress in solid timber. Consider the underside as well as the visible surface.

The underside is part of the finished product, not an unseen area that can be ignored.

Can you chop food directly on the worktop?

We do not recommend it. A knife can scratch resin and damage many protective timber finishes; use a suitable chopping board.

TotalBoat distinguishes limited contact with properly cured resin from cutting or preparing food on it: its support guidance does not recommend coating surfaces used for those tasks. A product’s limited-contact claim is not permission to use it as a chopping board.

A suitable chopping board is easier to replace and clean separately than the entire worktop. Choose one appropriate for food preparation and maintain it properly.

Food contact: specify the intended use

The European Commission states that food-contact materials placed on the EU market must comply with Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 and applicable good manufacturing practice requirements. Further EU or national provisions may apply depending on the material. This does not establish that any particular resin worktop is compliant.

The framework requires materials not to transfer constituents to food in amounts that could endanger health or cause unacceptable changes to its composition, taste or smell. The intended contact conditions and documentation for the finished material matter.

A kitchen worktop is not necessarily intended for direct food contact. If that is part of your brief, tell us before the material system is selected so that its suitability can be assessed for the intended conditions.

‘Food-safe resin’ needs a specific product and use

A claim about one manufacturer’s product cannot be applied to every epoxy resin, pigment or finished surface.

TotalBoat describes limited food contact for certain properly cured epoxies and separately excludes cutting and food-preparation surfaces in its guidance. Those manufacturer statements are product- and use-specific; they do not demonstrate EU compliance or suitability of another resin, pigment or topcoat.

The decision should be based on documentation for the actual material system and intended use, not a generic marketing phrase.

Water resistance is about the whole construction

Even where a fully cured resin is described as waterproof, the finished worktop includes timber, joints, openings, fittings, an underside and a wall junction. Assess the complete construction rather than transferring one material claim to the entire product.

Wipe up spills promptly rather than assuming they cannot cause harm. Avoid leaving standing water around the sink, particularly at joints or exposed timber details.

Dry the surface after use, paying particular attention to transitions between materials.

Oil, wine, lemon juice and cleaning products

Choose a finish suited to the intended kitchen use, then follow its cleaning instructions. Avoid harsh chemicals unless the surface manufacturer expressly permits them.

Wipe away lemon juice, coffee, red wine and grease promptly. Reducing contact time is a simple precaution; it does not make the surface universally stain-resistant.

For regular cleaning, use gentle products compatible with the specified topcoat or oil system.

Choosing the right sheen for everyday use

Mirror-gloss resin can look striking in photographs, but it also makes fingerprints, dust and fine surface marks more apparent.

On a substantial worktop, a satin or matt finish can feel calmer and sit more naturally with the surrounding materials, rather than turning the island into a large reflective surface.

A compatible lower-sheen protective finish can retain some of the clear resin’s visual depth. Review a sample of the complete system before deciding.

Planning worktop thickness

A thick edge can give the island a substantial presence, but added thickness also means more weight. A large timber and resin top needs appropriate support and a considered handling plan.

Thickness affects tap and hob installation, built-in power modules and the final working height. Check all these details together.

In some designs, a built-up edge can create a substantial appearance without making the whole top unnecessarily heavy. Its construction must suit the material and installation.

Supporting a breakfast-bar overhang

An island used for seating often has an overhang beyond the units. As that projection increases, the material’s stiffness and the support arrangement become more important.

Do not decide an overhang is safe simply because the oak is thick. Allow for people leaning on the edge and repeated loads in everyday use. The design needs an appropriate structural assessment; the worktop is not intended for sitting or climbing on.

A substantial overhang may need steel brackets, concealed supports or a purpose-designed base. The arrangement depends on the actual span, material and loads.

Power provision in the kitchen island

An island can benefit from planned sockets and USB-C charging for a laptop, phone or small appliances. Choose components and positions suitable for the kitchen environment and destination requirements.

Choose the actual module before CNC routing so that the recess matches its dimensions and installation instructions.

Plan the wiring route through the units and retain maintenance access. Electronic components should be replaceable without damaging the top, with installation carried out as required for the destination.

Make the island a considered focal point

A 2.5–3 metre island has a substantial presence in the room. The grain composition, resin position, lighting and relationship with the cabinet fronts all become part of the overall interior.

Prepare a visualisation or at least a layout showing the selected slabs before manufacture.

Plan joints alongside delivery

Some large worktops cannot be brought into the room in one piece. Where necessary, design a suitable sectional joint as part of the project.

It is better to resolve that joint in the CAD drawings than on the staircase on installation day.

For delivery across Europe, check doorways, lifts, stairs and building access before final manufacture. Agree packing, handling and fitting responsibilities too.

Discuss repairs before choosing the finish

Solid timber can offer scope for surface refurbishment. Some oil systems allow local repairs, and certain marks in a polished resin section may be addressed by refinishing. The method depends on the complete finish and the damage; repairability should not be assumed for every system.

Deep chips or heat damage need individual assessment and may involve more substantial work. A repair may be possible, but its extent and appearance cannot be guaranteed without inspecting the damage.

For a substantial bespoke island, discuss the likely maintenance and repair approach when selecting the finish, not only after a problem occurs.

Islands and counters for bars and restaurants

Commercial use can be far more demanding than a domestic kitchen: frequent cleaning, moving crockery, drink spills and long operating hours all affect the specification.

A high-gloss decorative system may not be the right choice. Specify a finish appropriate to the intended use, a compatible cleaning procedure and a maintenance plan, alongside any relevant food-contact requirements.

At a bar, the most expressive timber-and-resin detail can face the guests, while the bartender’s working area uses a material better suited to its practical demands.

When combining materials makes sense

A successful bespoke design need not use timber and resin everywhere.

An island might pair a timber-and-resin breakfast bar with a suitably specified ceramic surface near the hob. Another approach is a stone preparation area alongside a separate solid-timber breakfast bar.

Use the material best suited to each zone rather than making the entire kitchen resin-based simply to preserve a theme.

How we quote a bespoke kitchen worktop

The quote depends on the selected timber, dimensions, thickness, resin volume, cut-outs, CNC work, finish, supports, integrated details and delivery arrangements.

The choice of an exceptional walnut slab can have a substantial effect on the budget. Surface area alone does not capture the cost of an individual composition.

A meaningful quote starts with the dimensions and design, not a universal price per metre.

What to send for an initial estimate

Send a kitchen plan or worktop dimensions, photographs of the room, your preferred timber, a resin-colour reference and the sink and hob specifications.

If the kitchen is still at the design stage, a 3D visualisation is useful. For an island, include the wider interior so that we can consider the top’s proportions and materials in context.

Choosing the resin colour before considering the actual timber.

Ignoring timber moisture and seasonal movement.

Leaving end grain unprotected in the sink cut-out.

Putting hot cookware directly on the surface on the strength of an unspecified ‘heat-resistant’ claim.

Using a decorative worktop as a chopping board.

Designing an island without checking doorways, lifts and installation access.

Creating a substantial overhang without appropriate support.

Integrating electrical modules without access for replacement.

Insisting on one material for both a decorative breakfast bar and a demanding heat-exposed area when a combined design would be more appropriate.

Kitchen worktops: your questions answered

Can a worktop be made entirely from resin?

Resin-based worktops exist, but for our bespoke timber projects we usually assess a combined construction against the specific kitchen use. No resin system should be assumed suitable without checking its specifications.

Can I put a hot pan on it?

Use suitable heat protection. The temperature limits depend on the actual resin and finish; follow the agreed care instructions.

How does the worktop cope with water?

A suitable, fully cured resin can resist moisture, but the timber, cut-outs and joints also need appropriate protection. Wipe up water promptly and avoid prolonged wet conditions.

Can I have an undermounted sink?

It may be possible if the material system, protected cut-out and construction are suitable for that installation. We assess the actual sink and design before confirming it.

Can I cut directly on the surface?

We do not recommend it. Use a suitable chopping board to protect the finished surface.

Can clear resin have a warmer tint?

Yes, using compatible colourants for the chosen resin system. Agree the colour and degree of transparency with a sample.

Can sockets be integrated?

Yes, recesses can be prepared by CNC routing for the selected modules. Components, positions and electrical installation requirements must be agreed in advance.

Can you make a three-metre island top?

Yes, subject to reviewing the timber, structural support and delivery access. A sectional design may be appropriate for some projects.

Can I order the worktop without a complete kitchen?

Yes — the project scope is agreed individually.

Do you work with kitchen studios?

Yes, including white-label manufacturing under the studio’s brand by arrangement.

Do you deliver to Germany and Austria?

Yes, by arrangement. We plan the construction, packing and delivery for the actual dimensions, address and access route.

A worktop designed for everyday life

Even a beautiful timber-and-resin top misses the point if it leaves you anxious about everyday use or dealing with recurring moisture problems around the sink.

Kitchen design needs sound technical planning: appropriately dried timber, allowance for movement, protected cut-outs, understood heat limits, supported overhangs, accessible electrical components and a suitable finish. These details matter more than the effect in the first photograph.
