A counter in a bar, hotel, salon or office is a piece of furniture, a working space and part of the brand experience. An attractive front is only part of the brief. This guide explores construction, working zones, moisture exposure, point-of-sale equipment, cables, accessibility, branding and installation — and how to plan a bespoke counter for a European business interior.
A counter is more than a large table
It is easy to picture a counter as a long top with an attractive front. In use, the brief is more involved. Depending on the venue, it may need to accommodate fridges, a sink, coffee equipment, a till, printer, cables, lighting, ventilation, shelving, waste and storage — while leaving staff room to work. Guests see the other side, which can become a distinctive feature of the interior.
A bespoke counter brings together timber, resin, CNC detailing and metalwork. Solid timber gives it character, resin can introduce an accent or brand colour, and CNC routing allows planned artwork and equipment openings. A suitably designed metal structure provides support where the construction needs it.
We do not specify resin throughout simply because our workshop works with it. A wet working area may need stainless steel or another appropriately specified surface, with timber and resin reserved for the guest-facing side. A good business project starts with the function of each zone, not the maximum use of one material.
Consider the surface from every angle
A worktop, island or counter needs more than an attractive front view. Review the joints, cut-outs, working height, equipment access, cleaning arrangements and the route for bringing the finished section into the building.

2. Choose counter heights around the task
Different tasks call for different heights. A raised guest-facing bar top, a bartender’s working surface and an accessible service section can form part of the same counter, each at an appropriate level.
For public-facing counters, check the accessibility requirements that apply to the actual venue. As an international example, section 904.4.1 of the US ADA Standards generally specifies a sales or service counter section at least 915 mm long and no more than 915 mm high for a parallel approach, alongside the required clear floor space; exceptions and other provisions also apply. This is a US requirement, not a UK or European specification to copy into a project. It illustrates why a single high counter may not serve every visitor comfortably.
Your architect or responsible designer should confirm the dimensions and access requirements for the country, building and type of venue concerned.
3. Specify each side of the bar for its job
The guest-facing top sees glasses, elbows, phones and occasional spills. Behind the bar, the surface faces water, alcohol, citrus, ice, steam, metal tools and a more demanding cleaning routine.
A distinctive timber and resin top may suit the guest side, while the working area calls for stainless steel, compact laminate, stone or another surface system selected for the equipment, exposure and cleaning products in use.
Specifying materials by zone is a more considered approach than asking one decorative finish to do every job.
4. Let the timber express your brand
Oak brings a familiar, natural character to restaurants, wine venues, hotels and offices.
Walnut lends depth to a darker, more refined interior, particularly alongside brass, stone and warm lighting.
Ash offers a lighter, contemporary feel, with a striking contrast against black metal and darker resin.
Species is only part of the decision: the timber also needs to form a coherent composition across the full length. For a five-metre counter, plan the grain, sections and joints together rather than relying on finding one extraordinary slab.
5. Use resin where it adds something meaningful
Resin can form a central inlay, follow a natural timber edge, create a clear window or introduce a rich colour accent, logo, map or focused decorative detail.
A lobby bar might feature a subtle smoky ribbon that follows the grain. An engineering business could incorporate a suitable product component or metal detail into its reception desk. For a hotel, translucent resin could become part of a carefully planned lighting scheme.
The strongest result comes from a detail that belongs to the interior concept, not from using the most resin.
6. Give your logo the right treatment
Depending on the artwork and material, a logo can be laser-engraved, V-carved, routed and filled with resin, made as a timber or metal inlay, or applied as a separate plaque.
At reception, restrained branding often makes the strongest impression. A precise, well-lit mark can feel more assured than an oversized logo across the entire front.
For white-label projects, the counter can carry the client’s identity without any visible Ahoj Epoxy branding. We work to the visual brief agreed with the client or interior studio.
7. Make integrated lighting accessible for maintenance
LED lighting can sit beneath the front edge, within a shadow gap, behind a logo or below translucent resin.
Avoid permanently embedding lighting components without maintenance access. LED strips, drivers and connectors may need replacement during the life of the counter.
We plan removable access panels or service channels so lighting can be maintained without cutting into the finished reception desk.
8. Plan the till and payment terminal
Allow for the power, data connections and working space needed by the till, payment terminal, barcode scanner and receipt printer.
CNC-routed channels and under-counter trays can conceal cables while keeping them accessible for maintenance.
Decide where customers will use the terminal before manufacture. A short cable or a device tucked behind a high edge can make every payment unnecessarily awkward.
9. Integrate reception screens thoughtfully
A screen should feel part of the reception design, not an afterthought. Appropriate monitor arms, concealed cable routes and a defined equipment area help keep the arrangement tidy.
If a front panel is intended to partly screen the monitor from visitors, design it around the actual equipment and the receptionist’s sightline.
Do not compromise a comfortable working position just to hide the screen behind an attractive front. Staff ergonomics remain part of the brief.
10. Give cables a planned route
A commercial counter usually contains more cabling than the visual suggests: power, network, till, lighting, screens, charging, printer, router, alarm and sometimes audio.
A coordinated service route with maintenance access is preferable to drilling extra holes as each piece of equipment arrives.
For a counter delivered in sections, label the modules and connections and agree the assembly information so the installation team can put it together efficiently.
11. Allow for sockets and USB-C charging
Reception may need accessible sockets for a laptop, phone or temporary equipment. A bar needs a coordinated power provision for coffee equipment, refrigeration and other appliances.
Electrical design and connection sit with the suitably qualified professionals responsible for the installation. We prepare the agreed equipment openings, cable routes and access within the furniture.
For USB-C charging, check the module’s supported power and charging protocol, together with the power supply, cable and device. A USB-C connector alone does not establish charging performance.
12. Specify the sink area for daily wet use
The sink area needs a specification suited to repeated wet use. Here, water is part of the working day rather than an occasional spill.
Where timber is used nearby, its cut edges, joints and underside need appropriate detailing and protection as part of the wet-zone design. A decorative finish alone does not make the complete construction waterproof.
For intensive cocktail service, we can specify an appropriate stainless-steel system for the demanding wet area, reserving timber for the surfaces where its appearance and feel add most value.
13. Account for heat at the coffee counter
An espresso machine brings weight, heat and steam. The grinder produces coffee dust, while a knock box adds impact and moisture. Plan the counter around the actual equipment.
Do not place decorative resin in an area of sustained high heat without confirming the suitability and limits of the specific resin and finish system.
As with a kitchen worktop, heat resistance depends on the specified material system; it is not a universal property of every epoxy surface.
14. Match the finish to your cleaning routine
Alcohol, citrus, syrups and cleaning products are everyday exposures in a bar. Select the finish for the actual use and maintenance routine, checking product compatibility.
Tell us about any strong degreaser or alcohol-based disinfectant used by staff before the coating is specified. These products are not automatically compatible with every finish.
For commercial projects, we recommend supplying concise care instructions with the finished counter.
15. Think beyond opening day
A busy counter will develop signs of use. Rather than expecting a scratch-proof surface, consider its care requirements and the options for maintenance or refurbishment.
Fine scratches can be more noticeable on dark, high-gloss resin than on a satin finish or a surface with varied timber grain.
For a hotel or hospitality venue, choose a finish with everyday service in mind — not just the opening-day photograph.
16. The front need not be solid timber throughout
The front can combine veneered panels, fluted MDF, CNC-carved relief, solid timber details, metal and resin inlays, as appropriate to the design and exposure.
A considered construction can reduce weight, simplify installation and focus the budget on the details customers actually see.
Premium bespoke furniture does not need to be excessively heavy. It needs to be thoughtfully designed.
17. Add depth with CNC detailing
A reception front can provide a striking setting for geometric carving, vertical fluting or a flowing CNC-machined pattern.
Assess the pattern from a visitor’s normal viewing distance. Very fine detailing may add cleaning effort without making the design more effective.
CNC machining also allows a coordinated pattern to repeat accurately across the counter’s modules.
18. Curved counters need coordinated geometry
A curved front can soften the space and help guide visitors, but it also adds complexity to manufacture and installation.
The radius affects the frame, panels, edges and transport plan. Where the counter is made in modules, place the joints deliberately so they work with the design.
For an organic form, a shared 3D model helps the different suppliers work to the same geometry.
19. Make hotel reception part of the welcome
A hotel reception desk brings together brand identity, guest service, storage, room keys, paperwork and, where relevant, security requirements.
It is one of the first things guests see, so the materials and detailing help set the tone for their stay.
The design can tell a local story through a characteristic timber, a map of the region, a resin colour inspired by the landscape or a metal detail carrying the hotel’s identity.
20. Connect office reception to the wider interior
Office reception benefits from a calm architectural composition and well-resolved cable management.
The counter can share materials or details with meeting-room furniture and wall panels, giving the entrance a coherent visual identity.
For a business with a physical product, a suitable component, CNC pattern or inlay can make a subtle connection to what the company does.
21. Match the surface to the venue
A salon or clinic counter may be smaller, yet still face frequent customer contact, cosmetics and cleaning products.
In a showroom, the welcome counter can also become a product display.
Select the material and finish for the actual setting. An attractive oiled surface is not automatically suitable for daily disinfection; check the specified system against the cleaning regime.
23. Plan how the counter will reach its final position
For a five-metre reception desk, manufacturing one indivisible unit is rarely the most practical approach. The access route should inform the construction.
We can divide the construction into transportable modules and coordinate the joints so the assembled counter reads as one considered piece.
Check doors, lifts, stairs, the unloading area and the complete carrying route before manufacture.
24. Allow for the floor you actually have
An existing floor may not be perfectly level. Across a counter several metres long, even small variations can become noticeable.
Appropriately specified adjustable feet and plinth detailing can help level the structure, with the final cover or shadow gap coordinated afterwards.
A heavy timber top cannot compensate for an uneven floor or a poorly levelled base.
25. Measure interfaces with walls and columns
Where the counter meets a wall, column or glazed partition, confirm the final dimensions after the main building work is complete.
The finished site can differ from the architectural drawings by several millimetres or more.
For a complex interface, a template or a further site measurement may be needed before the final CNC machining.
26. Agree fire and technical requirements early
A commercial interior may have project-specific requirements for materials, electrical installations, escape routes and other details. Confirm the applicable requirements with the responsible professionals.
We do not replace the architect or fire specialist. Any required classification or certification needs to be identified in the brief before materials are selected, so suitability can be assessed rather than assumed.
This deserves particular attention in hotels, shopping centres, public buildings and larger business premises.
27. Coordinate packing and European delivery
A bespoke counter is not an ordinary courier parcel. Packing needs to protect long edges, finished surfaces, metal components and corners throughout handling and transport.
Our Bratislava workshop is well placed for road delivery to Austria, Czechia and Germany. Delivery arrangements and costs depend on the destination, packed dimensions, handling and any agreed installation work.
Some projects suit pre-assembled modules; others travel more efficiently as separate panels and a top. We agree the approach around the design and installation plan.
28. A Bratislava workshop for European projects
Bespoke hospitality furniture involves substantial design and workshop time. Our Bratislava workshop offers a specialist manufacturing option for European clients. Compare complete, like-for-like quotations, including the specification, delivery and installation, rather than assuming a saving from location alone.
A central European manufacturing base allows road transport and coordinated arrangements for samples and installation. The programme still needs to be agreed for the individual project.
For Switzerland, agree the relevant customs and import arrangements separately, as the destination is outside the EU.
29. Turn a studio’s design into a buildable counter
An interior studio can supply CAD drawings, elevations, the material concept, 3D visuals and the project specification.
We develop the agreed design into manufacturing details: joints, modules, CNC files, the metal structure, resin casting sequence, finishes and packing.
If a detail in the visual needs stronger support or better maintenance access, we discuss it before manufacture. Resolving it on paper is better than building a problem into the finished piece.
30. Manufacturing under your brand

31. Approve the details on a physical sample
Review the resin colour and transparency, sheen, timber stain, metal finish, engraving depth and decorative lighting colour temperature.
A screen cannot reliably reproduce the appearance of the finished material. For a substantial reception desk, a physical sample is a worthwhile step before committing to manufacture.
For a multi-site programme, the approved sample becomes a reference for subsequent locations.
32. Create a consistent design across locations
For a restaurant group, salon business or retail brand opening several sites, a bespoke counter design can form the basis of a repeatable specification.
Natural timber varies from piece to piece, while dimensions, CNC patterns, agreed resin colours, metalwork and service zones can be coordinated across the programme.
The result can retain the character of craft while giving every location a recognisable identity.
33. Understand what shapes the quotation
Key factors include dimensions, timber, resin volume, CNC work, curved geometry, the metal frame, integrated lighting, storage, fittings, module count, finishes, packing, delivery and installation.
Equipment interfaces matter too. A straightforward welcome desk has a different scope from a fully equipped cocktail bar with wet working zones.
A price per linear metre is therefore only a very rough starting point, not a reliable quotation for the finished counter.
34. Send us a useful starting brief
Send a floor plan, approximate counter dimensions, a 3D model or reference images, the venue’s purpose, an equipment list and the installation country.
For a bar, include the espresso machine, fridge, sink and point-of-sale models. For reception, tell us about screens, storage, access controls and the access requirements confirmed by your designer.
If a studio is leading the project, CAD drawings and a material specification are especially helpful from the outset.
