Choosing timber for a resin table: oak, walnut, ash and more

A practical guide to solid timber for river tables, dining tables, desks and meeting tables. Compare grain, colour, stability, machining and cost, and discover how different timbers work alongside epoxy resin.

Choosing timber starts with more than colour

Resin often catches your eye first in a photograph. Yet over years of use, the timber has just as much influence on a table’s character, the way it ages and how naturally it sits in your room. Choosing oak or walnut is therefore about more than looks: grain, density, movement with changes in humidity, drying quality, available slab sizes and budget all play a part.

The same clear resin looks quite different alongside oak, walnut and ash. Oak brings pronounced texture and visual weight. Walnut creates a darker, quieter composition with a rich feel. Ash adds lightness, long flowing grain and a more graphic, contemporary character. And those are only the differences you can see.

At Ahoj Epoxy, we wouldn’t suggest choosing a timber from one appealing photograph. Start with where the table will stand, its dimensions, how you’ll use it, the surrounding materials and the role you want the resin to play. That usually narrows the choice to two or three genuinely suitable options.

The one-minute guide

Oak is usually the most versatile starting point. Familiar, strong and architectural, it works in contemporary, industrial and traditional interiors. If you’re unsure where to begin, oak is often a sensible first option to explore.

Choose walnut for a darker, warmer table with a richer feel. It pairs beautifully with clear, smoky, graphite, amber and very dark resin. It often suits studies, meeting rooms and carefully considered home interiors — places where the table should have presence without dominating the room.

Ash suits lighter interiors and more graphic designs. It is strong and resilient, with distinct growth rings, and takes stains and tints well. Paired with resin, it can feel thoroughly contemporary, especially when the colour palette is kept restrained.

The individual board matters more than the name

Species matters, but the individual board matters more. Two oak slabs can differ more than catalogue samples of oak and ash. Width, shape, cutting orientation, sapwood, knots, cracks, internal stresses, live-edge character and drying quality all affect the result.

Features that conventional furniture making might reject can become the focal point of a resin table: a natural split, a fork in the grain, a hollow, an old knot or an irregular edge. But they must be technically manageable. An attractive hollow must not compromise strength or conceal damp or deteriorating timber.

A good workshop assesses the material first. Where does a crack run, and is it stable? Does bark need removing? Are there soft or loose areas? How will the board behave after machining and flattening? Only then does it make sense to design the resin river and choose a pigment.

Oak, walnut and ash: a practical comparison

These figures are useful guides, not specifications for an individual slab. Timber properties vary with origin, growing conditions, cutting orientation and moisture content.

1. European oak: versatile, never ordinary

European oak, particularly Quercus robur and Quercus petraea, is a natural starting point for a bespoke table. TRADA gives an average density of around 720 kg/m³ and lists furniture, joinery and flooring among its traditional uses. Oak has a pronounced ring-porous structure, a coarser texture and characteristic medullary rays, most visible in quarter-sawn timber.

Oak’s great strength is its versatility. Light, natural oak with clear resin feels contemporary and understated. A darker finish can suit a traditional room or an executive office, while black or graphite resin gives it a more architectural edge. Blue resin is another option, though a restrained use of depth and translucency can be more compelling than a vivid colour effect.

Oak contains tannins, which can cause dark staining when iron and moisture are present. Tools, fixings and wet processes therefore need care during manufacture. That isn’t a reason to avoid oak; it is an example of the practical details behind good craftsmanship that a visualisation cannot show.

Oak’s visual weight also suits large dining and meeting tables. A broad slab has presence even with very little resin. Where a room already has oak flooring, doors or wall panels, the table can echo those tones or create a deliberate contrast. Compare physical samples before deciding.

Where oak works particularly well

Oak suits family dining tables, larger tables in open-plan kitchens and living spaces, meeting tables, restaurant furniture, reception counters, desks and interior studio commissions. It is also a good choice when you want a natural, substantial feel without a particularly dark colour.

For business projects, oak offers another advantage: its character is familiar across Europe. A German design studio, an Austrian restaurant and a Czech office may take different views on a bold resin design, but quality oak is a versatile foundation for all three.

2. Walnut: richness without extra colour

Walnut often appeals to people who already know they want a darker table. European walnut, Juglans regia, has an average dry-timber density of around 640 kg/m³ and generally machines, bonds and finishes well. Its heartwood ranges from light brown to chocolate, sometimes with grey, reddish or violet tones and darker streaks.

Walnut rarely needs a bold resin colour to make an impression. Clear, deep smoky, black, graphite or warm amber resin often complements it better than vivid blue. A good walnut slab already offers plenty of interest: tonal changes, sapwood, branching grain, waves and curly figure.

Walnut works especially well in studies, meeting rooms, executive offices and residential, hotel or restaurant interiors built around dark timber, stone, metal and subdued lighting. A large walnut table can feel visually lighter than oak, even though it remains a substantial piece of solid-timber furniture.

Walnut is often more expensive, and finding an attractive large slab in the right shape can take more searching. A firm square-metre price before selecting the material would therefore be misleading. Your commission is built around actual boards, their grain and the composition they make possible — not a generic walnut sample.

European walnut and American black walnut

Several walnut species are used commercially. American black walnut, Juglans nigra, is also a popular furniture timber. The USDA describes it as drying well, retaining its shape once dry and machining easily, with traditional uses in tables, office furniture and fine furniture. Its dark colour is often more uniform.

European walnut can show more tonal variation and expressive figure. Neither is universally better. For a resin table, comparing the slabs actually available for your commission is more useful than debating species in the abstract.

3. Ash: striking grain and a lighter, contemporary feel

European ash, Fraxinus excelsior, deserves more attention in resin furniture. TRADA describes a straight-grained, strong and resilient timber widely used for furniture and flooring. Average density is around 680–710 kg/m³. Its overall strength is comparable to oak, with particular toughness and resistance to splitting.

Ash is lighter in appearance than oak, often with clear, long growth-ring patterns. That makes it well suited to Scandinavian-style and minimalist interiors. Clear resin can almost disappear beside ash, allowing the timber to lead, while black or dark resin creates a strong graphic contrast.

Ash takes stains and tints well, so it can suit projects needing a particular tone without walnut’s cost. Staining it to resemble walnut is not a reason to describe it as walnut, however. Its own strengths deserve to be celebrated: lightness, grain, strength and contemporary character.

Olive ash is an interesting variation, with dark streaks in the heartwood. Its distinctive appearance can make it feel like an entirely different timber and suits a one-off statement table.

4. Elm: expressive grain and natural character

Elm is a worthwhile alternative to the three more familiar choices. Its expressive grain, intricate fibre patterns and natural edges give it plenty of character. In a resin composition it often feels less restrained than oak, making it a good candidate when the slab’s natural shape should lead the design.

That intricate grain also makes machining more demanding. Reversing and interlocked grain needs careful routing and sanding. Choose an elm slab with your maker rather than buying a board first and only then looking for someone who can turn it into a table.

5. Maple: a quiet backdrop for resin and contemporary design

Maple offers a pale colour and a quieter texture. Where coloured resin, a metal base or more complex geometry is the focus, it provides a relatively neutral backdrop. Dark, smoky and richly coloured resin inlays stand out particularly well against it.

Some maple species also offer the hardness needed for furniture. The availability of large boards in Europe depends on the supplier, however. Maple is therefore a choice to explore for a particular brief, rather than a default for every large river table.

6. Beech: a useful furniture timber, but not always the river-table focal point

Beech is strong, hard, widely used in European furniture and straightforward to machine. Its grain is generally quieter than oak, ash or walnut. If you want a table defined by dramatic live edges, hollows and texture, beech may offer less of that natural character.

It can make good sense for geometric designs, repeat products, base components and mixed-material furniture, or wherever pale, consistent solid timber is needed at a reasonable cost. Beech responds noticeably to changes in humidity, so sound construction and proper drying are especially important.

A good slab matters more than an appealing species name

On social media, ‘slab’ is sometimes treated as shorthand for quality. It describes the form of a board, not a guarantee of proper drying, low internal stresses or suitable geometry. A thick, broad slab can look spectacular and still be a poor starting point for furniture.

Before designing, we check moisture content, splits, bowing, twist, bark condition, soft areas, signs of insects, internal hollows and the thickness allowance needed for flattening. A 70 mm board may be considerably thinner after stabilising and machining. That needs to be accounted for before agreeing the table’s proportions.

A live edge does not mean leaving the bark in place. Bark may be weakly attached and come away over time. For a reliable casting, loose layers are removed back to sound timber. The natural outline remains, without material that could detach later.

Moisture content: what a photograph cannot tell you

Timber absorbs and releases moisture as it seeks equilibrium with the surrounding air. The USDA Wood Handbook explains the relationship between moisture, shrinkage, swelling and dimensional stability. Even a well-made table is not a perfectly unchanging material.

For bonding timber with epoxy, WEST SYSTEM recommends a moisture content no higher than 12%, identifying 8–12% as ideal for its system. That is not a universal specification for every resin, but it illustrates an important principle: visibly wet timber must not be cast in resin.

Excess moisture creates several risks. The board can keep shrinking after manufacture, change shape, develop internal stresses and cause adhesion problems at the resin joint. ‘We found a beautiful freshly cut slab and will cast it tomorrow’ may make a compelling short video, but it is not a sound production plan.

Why timber must still be allowed to move

Properly dried timber still responds to seasonal changes in relative humidity, changing dimensions slightly, particularly across the grain. Fixing a solid-timber top to a metal or timber base must allow for that movement.

Rigidly screwing a wide top down at numerous fixed points and hoping the metal will restrain it is not a good solution. Sound furniture construction accommodates controlled movement rather than fighting it. The right fixing method depends on the geometry of both top and base.

This matters particularly for commissions travelling between countries. A table made in Bratislava may be used in a heated German home, an Austrian restaurant or a Swiss mountain chalet. Indoor conditions, heating and seasonal humidity can differ from those in the workshop. Packaging, acclimatisation and construction therefore belong in the project plan, not as an afterthought to delivery.

How timber changes the appearance of resin

Resin colour needs to be considered alongside the timber. The same translucent grey can feel cooler and more contrasting beside pale ash, yet deeper and almost black beside walnut. Clear amber resin can bring warmth to oak but become barely noticeable against dark walnut.

Light reflection matters too. A polished, transparent surface can feel visually lighter beside matt timber, whereas dark, opaque resin creates a continuous graphic shape. The more expressive the grain, the less competing decoration it usually needs.

Physical samples are the best way to choose a pigment. A small trial casting shows not just the colour, but its depth, translucency, response to light and relationship with the chosen timber finish.

Clear or coloured resin: pairings worth exploring

Oak works with clear, smoky, graphite, black, milky and deep grey-green resin. In a neutral room, we would usually favour a nuanced, subdued tone over a bright river chosen purely for impact.

With walnut, start by considering clear or very dark resin. The timber already brings rich contrast; another saturated colour can make the composition feel unnecessarily busy.

Ash offers plenty of scope. Its pale timber can carry dark graphic shapes, coloured accents or completely clear resin. But it also makes an ill-matched pigment particularly noticeable, so choose with the room in mind.

Choosing timber for the way you use your table

For a large dining table, oak is often the most versatile choice. It feels at home in family spaces, carries a larger format well and pairs easily with other natural materials.

For an executive desk, walnut often appeals through its depth of colour and understated, rich texture. In a lighter, technology-led study, ash with graphite resin is an interesting alternative.

Meeting tables need the right scale, stability and relationship with the surrounding interior. Oak and walnut are both sensible options. Business commissions can incorporate cable ports, power sockets, a logo, brand-coloured resin and a detachable base to simplify delivery.

For a gaming or work desk, ash combines strength with a contemporary appearance. It pairs well with black metal, lighting and dark accessories. Oak suits a setup that should feel less technology-led and more understated.

A coffee table gives you more freedom to explore an intricate slab, a striking live edge or an experimental resin treatment. A smaller piece can carry a bold visual accent without overwhelming the room.

Choosing around your interior

If the room already contains plenty of timber, don’t choose a tone from a phone photograph alone. Even two natural oak samples can differ noticeably. First decide whether you want a close match or a deliberate contrast. A table that almost matches the floor can look less considered than one that confidently differs.

Ash and natural oak sit comfortably in pale, minimalist rooms. Walnut often suits warmer interiors featuring stone, brass, dark metal and leather. For an industrial space, oak with a black base and dark resin offers a convincing material-led design rather than a purely decorative effect.

In a restaurant or bar, the brand can guide the choice. Where an existing interior uses a particular timber, we can select materials and finishes to complement it. For a new space, the table or bar counter can become the starting point for the wider colour palette.

What affects cost beyond the timber species

Timber cost matters, but it is only part of a bespoke table’s budget. Slab dimensions and thickness, grade and rarity of figure, joining requirements, hollows, resin volume, shape complexity, CNC machining, the base, finishing and logistics all affect the total.

A large, single-piece walnut slab can cost considerably more than several oak boards. Yet unusually broad oak with rare curly figure may cost more than ordinary walnut. An honest quotation starts with dimensions and design, then considers the actual material available from the supplier.

Sometimes the better investment is a stronger timber choice with restrained resin, rather than average timber dressed up with an eye-catching pigment. Even a resin-rich table remains a piece of timber furniture.

Choosing timber for studio and white-label projects

For an interior or furniture studio, appearance is only part of the brief. Repeatability, a defined finish, sample approval, predictable logistics and project documentation matter too. A single table for a private home can be designed around a unique slab. For six restaurant tables, a timber character that can be carried consistently across the collection becomes more important.

Natural timber cannot be replicated identically like moulded plastic, but dimensions, finish tone, geometry, sapwood proportion, edge character and resin colour can be specified consistently. Timber choices that can become expensive mistakes

First: choosing by species alone. ‘I want oak’ says nothing about the grain, width or quality of the actual boards. Ask to see the slabs themselves, or at least representative examples of available stock.

Second: buying wet timber for an attractive live edge. Large solid-timber sections take time to dry. Rushing that process can lead to cracking, distortion and problems with the resin later.

Third: leaving unstable bark inside a casting. The natural outline can be retained without a loose layer that may detach over time.

Fourth: choosing the boldest resin before the timber. Beautiful walnut can end up as little more than a backdrop to a bright blue casting. Choose the timber first, then the resin.

Fifth: overlooking the base. A heavy solid-timber top needs proper support, with fixings that allow for natural movement.

Sixth: trying to copy a Pinterest image exactly. Another slab’s shape, splits and colour cannot be reproduced identically. Use the reference as a direction, then develop the design around the material actually available.

Step 2. Note the dimensions and room conditions: length, width, seating, walkways, sunlight, heating and the tones of the floor and furniture.

Step 3. Agree the character: light or dark, understated or contrasting, live-edged or more geometric.

Step 4. Review the slabs actually available. This is where general advice about species becomes a choice of real boards.

Step 5. Agree the proportion of resin and prepare a colour sample where the shade is important.

Step 6. Design the base, fixings, cable management and any detachable elements.

Step 7. Plan manufacture and delivery as one project, especially when the table is travelling to another country.

Which is stronger: oak or ash?

Both suit quality furniture. Ash offers particular toughness and resistance to splitting; oak combines strength, density and durability. For an everyday table, construction, finish and material quality matter more in practice than a headline strength figure.

Which costs more: oak or walnut?

Large, high-quality walnut is usually more expensive, but an unusual oak slab can reverse that comparison. We price the actual material, not just the species.

Can you make a table from timber I supply?

Sometimes. We first need to assess the species, moisture content, condition, dimensions and storage history. Freshly cut timber is not automatically ready to become a table.

Can reclaimed timber be used?

Yes, reclaimed or restored timber can produce a beautiful result. It needs checking for metal, damage, contamination, moisture and structural soundness first.

Which timber works best with clear resin?

There is no single best choice. Walnut brings deep contrast, oak feels natural and versatile, and ash creates a lighter, more graphic composition.

Can the timber complement my flooring or kitchen?

Yes. A physical sample is best, or clear photographs taken in neutral light. An exact colour match is not always necessary: a deliberate contrast can look more considered.

Can you make a matching collection for a restaurant or office?

Yes. We agree slab-selection criteria, the tonal range, geometry, finish and resin colour in advance. Natural boards will never be identical, and that individuality is often part of their appeal.

The best timber is the one that suits your table

Oak is not merely the basic option, walnut is not automatically the best high-end choice, and ash is not a budget substitute. Each species has its own character and technical properties. More importantly, every individual board is different.

A good resin table starts with more than an image of a river. It begins with properly dried solid timber, a clear purpose and construction that respects the material. Resin then highlights the shape, fills hollows and adds depth, colour or transparency.
